Damage examination
When the reason for damage is known different methods could be developed to avoid or minimize damages and failures in the future. The detection of the cause of a damage or failure depends on the timescale. The longer the damage or failure exists the more complex is the detection of the cause. A failure could have many causes and the interaction of these causes is not easy to distinguish.

Damping
Plastics have a high damping potential and are thus often used as noise protection.
Deep drawing
Deep drawing is a forming process where a plastic sheet is moulded by means of vacuum or mechanical load in a mould.
Degradable plastics
Degradable polymers or plastic materials are divided in biodegradable and UV-degradable plastics. The plastics were chemically degraded as a result of a biologically process or UV-light.
Density
The density of a material is defined as mass per unit volume. Plastics have in comparison to other materials low density and could thus save energy.
Diffusion
Diffusion is defined as the moving of molecules or other matter through a bulk material from high concentration to low concentration.
Dilatometer
A dilatometer is a physical instrument to measure the expansion or shrinkage (volume change) of a plastic material.
By means of a dilatometer the thermal expansion coefficient and the volume expansion could be measured.
Discolouration
Plastics could be pigmented in any order. The pigments often consist of organic agents not fully UV resistant. Due to insufficient UV resistivity the polymers discolour after continuous exposure to UV light. The discolouring could be avoided when UV resistant pigments are used. The UV resistance of a pigment is defined in a scale from 1 to 7 where 7 have the highest UV resistance.
DOC
DOC is the abbreviation for Dissolved Organic Carbon. The DOC is a measure for the total amount of organic substances dissolved in water.
DSC
DSC is the abbreviation for Differential Scanning Calorimetry. The DSC is a physical instrument to measure the heat flux of a sample (typical weight 5 – 20 mg). By means of DSC the smelting temperature, the crystallisation, the glass transition temperature, the oxidation stability (OIT), the amount of crystallinity, the curing of resins and many more thermal properties could be measured.
DTA
DTA is known as Differential Thermo Analysis and is a measurement method to evaluate the thermal properties of a polymer.
